2018 FIM North America Vintage Road Racing Championships

The 95th annual Laconia Motorcycle Week wasn’t complete without a trip to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the 2018 FIM North America Vintage Road Racing Championships the weekend of June 9-10, 2018.

Races started off with Registration from 7am to 1030am both days, then off to Technical Inspection 7:30 to 11:00 am. The Mandatory Riders Meeting was held at 7:30 am.

Practice sessions ran from 8am to 10:00 am… and then it was on! Racing began at 10:15am.

The United States Classic Racing Association (USCRA) racing event got its start back in the mid 1970s. Vintage races organized by a racer, Bob Coy, who raced Yamaha TZ350s and AMA Superbikes joined forces with Rob Ianucci. Their partnership led them to organize vintage races on Long Island at the old Bridgehampton Raceway. It was from there that Bob found the opportunity to organize and pull off a solo stand-alone vintage event in 1981. The event was held at the Old Bryar Motorsports Park in Laconia over the 4th of July weekend. The Belknap Cup Summer Vintage Festival was born. The event featured “classic racing machinery” both two wheeled and four wheeled.

The event was declared a success and was added to the Annual schedule until 1990, when the track was sold. After renovation, the track was renamed New Hampshire International Speedway. The Belknap Cup Summer Vintage Festival also was christened with a new name: the Vintage Celebration. USCRA was contracted in 1990 by the speedway to oversee the motorcycle portion of the program. It only took two years, but the event transformed into a full seasonal racing stand -alone event.

The USCRA quotes: “…Staying true to the heritage of classic Grand Prix motorcycle road racing, the USCRA promoted the best of vintage racing machines including classes that were all but extinct in North America, namely Sidecars and 50cc Grand Prix. Today, from that limited mid-'70s beginning, the USCRA is the oldest continually operating vintage road racing organization in the country and includes over 300 active members. All of our events are AMA sanctioned and participants must be licensed with the USCRA or another accredited racing organization.

The United States Classic Racing Association (USCRA) actively promotes four general types of events: Road racing on both proprietary built road race circuits and real roads courses like Gunstock and the Streets of Laconia, Observed Trials, Motogiro and Pewter Run touring events held on open public roads.

The Race is sanctioned by FIM - Fédération Internationale Motocyclistes. This organization was founded December 21, 1904 at the site of the Ledoyen Restaurant in Paris, France. Initially it was called the Fédération Internationale des Clubs Motocyclistes (FICM). Earlier that year, in September, a race was organized in Dourdan, France called the International Cup. Several countries participated i.e. France, Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, and Austria. France won, but there were issues afterward that arose about the racing conditions. These issues brought the five countries together to form the FICM.
In July, 1906, the delegates from Austria, France, Germany and Great Britain voted to dissolve FICM. FICM remained inactive until November 1912, when participants from the United States, Italy, Great Britain, The Netherlands, France, Belgium and Denmark voted to re-establish the FICM to help maintain and supervise the growing motorcycling sport. Germany, Austria and Switzerland jumped on board a few weeks later.

Surviving World War II, the organization persevered. In 1949, the organization became the FIM
Fédération Internationale Motocyclistes. 2004 was the 100th year “birthday” of the organization. Today, …“Motorcycling sport is run, at FIM World Championships and Prizes level, in six different disciplines.
Road Racing, which include Grand Prix, Superbike, Supersport, Sidecar and Endurance: Motocross (with three solo classes, women, veterans and the sidecars), the Motocross of Nations (competition with National teams), Supercross, SuperMoto, Snowcross; the Trial, with Individual Trial, Indoor Trial, Trial des Nations, with competitions for men and for women; Enduro, with the Individual World Championships including women and junior, and the International Six Days – run since 1913, the oldest competition held under the aegis of the FIM. The Cross-Country Rallies are managed by a new Commission created by the new Statutes.
Finally, Track Racing includes Individual Speedway Grand Prix, the Speedway World Cup (team), Junior Speedway, Long Track and Ice Racing (individual and Team). All this represents a total of 59 FIM World Championships and Prizes.

With 95 years of the Laconia Motorcycle Week coupled with historic racing, also including the Loudon Road Race Series and Vintage Side Car Races the weekend of June 16th and 17th rocked. 

The track had a Weekend Swap meet on the 8th thru 10th, as well as daily events and rides in, out of, and around the grounds. The Wall of Death, a burn out pit, custom bike shows, Vendors, Motorcycle demo courses for Indian, Slingshot, Yamaha, Aprilia, and MotoGuzzi and rotating bands gave you a place to hang out for the day.

The second stop for the day wound up at the North East Motor Sports Museum at 922 NH Rt. 106N, in Loudon. The Museum was built as a labor of love by the area racing community.
Everything needed for construction was donated by local contractors, racers, friends and fans to get the 10,000 square foot building up and running. The all-Volunteer staff are very knowledgeable about the cars, motorcycles, and even soap box derby display, and willing to assist with a grand tour.

The Lobby Display held the 401 CID BUICK V8 engine that Ed “The Savage” Sarno built a Drag bike around. He raced the quarter mile at the New England Dragway Quarter Mile and then declared that the bike was so dangerous that no one should ever ride it again so it was donated to the museum.

The museum also houses some of the oldest racing books in existence along with thousands of photographs from past and present race tracks and drivers.

Displays throughout the museum are changed out frequently. The museum accepts donations of items to be a part of the permanent collection i.e. “…photography, videos, programs, posters, helmets, uniforms, trophies, pit pass stubs, and complete cars and motorcycles.

The Museum is a 501-c-3 non-profit corporation and welcomes all contributions to the museum. For the donor, a contribution will, "lower your federal income tax requirement.”
